Organizing Tip of the Month: "This a great month to organize your freezer!"

Whether you just have a small fridge freezer or a large stand up unit, this is a great month to organize it.  Why, you may be wondering?  Because any day is a good day for the job when the weather is cold.  Right now you don’t have to worry about food spoiling in the trash can, attracting bugs and vermin and stinking up your garage until trash day.
Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Assemble your supplies – STURDY trash bags & a trash can, gloves for your hands, old towels if you need to defrost your appliance & bins/baskets for food (make sure they fit on your freezer shelves before you buy them!
  • Remove food one shelf at a time, check expiration dates and toss anything that’s questionable.
  • Keep a notepad handy to record any expired items you may want to replace.
  • Defrost the freezer if it isn’t a self-defrosting model.
  • Sort your food into categories that make sense for you – one basket for chicken, another for vegetables, etc. and replace on shelves.   Remember to label the bins!
  • Stand back and admire your easy to find, organized freezer.

You might get so inspired that you want to tackle the fridge next ...see my blog this month for tips on that.

Donations That Make a Difference: Oops, they did it again!

It’s nice to be able to offer you an easy recycling resource.  Many of you may already know from previous posts that Best Buy stores in Michigan will take back almost any type of appliance or electronic device for recycling (just drop them at your local store in the customer service dept.)  Now they’re offering additional recycling via convenient bins in the store entrance.  If you’re hubby has finally worn out the TV remote or the kids have trashed their game controllers they’ll take them.  They’ve also added bins for old computer cords, used gift cards and several other items.  Now there’s no need to toss those things in the trash, Best Buy has made recycling simple once again.  Easy peasy – ya gotta like that!
