I am often asked "How'd you come up with that name?"
I chose this name for my business for several reasons. First because it was funny and we all need more humor in our lives. “Eat That Elephant” is named after an old African joke:
“How do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “One bite at a time.”
When I first heard this several years ago it immediately brought to mind organizing (well, actually first I laughed, then I thought :). Second, I wanted a name that encompassed both the mental and the physical effect our clutter can have on us. So often our area’s of disorganization are the literal “elephants in the room”. Thirdly it perfectly describes how can we get rid of those elephants, by taking what we perceive to be a large complex job (the cause of overwhelm) and breaking it down into small manageable pieces (this principle is also known as Kaizen/small steps). These three things were the concept behind the name, that disorganization can be conquered in the same way you eat an elephant – one small bite at a time. Big organizing projects are overwhelming, especially if organizing is not your favorite thing to do but by focusing on one small area at a time big results can be obtained!
