July 2010 - As you can see this is a large garage, you are viewing the rear 2/3. Prior to starting work you could not see from the front of the garage to the back or walk easily from side to side. The goal of this project was a) to get rid of unnecessary items b) to simplify tool retrieval c) to create floor space to park the car d) to create an area for working on projects. Happy to say we accomplished all four.

We started this project by going through the garage one section at a time and sorting/purging what we found. As we worked categories emerged and we were able to create a zone for each category. We also used vertical space by using shelving units such as this one. This is a large property with acreage so there were a lot of yard chemicals and tools to store. This shelving unit holds yard chemicals, garden hand tools and seeds. As is typical with many disorganized spaces we found numerous duplicate items. Now that they are found they can be gradually used up and that will free up space on this shelving unit for other related items.

Tool Zone - The pegboard was already in place here but not being used so this naturally became the tool zone. Small hand tools and related items are stored here. In the near future the empty shelves below the pegboard will be removed and a work bench will be installed there. Beneath the workbench we will store several garbage cans we have put on wheels containing driveway salt and assorted types of bird seed which are currently stored along the back wall. This will free up space there and allow the owner to wheel the cans to the car to easily unload the large bags of salt and seed.

Here's an idea for you tool guys. This is a magnetic parts holder you can buy where tools are sold. Because it's magnetic you can attach it to the inside lid of a metal tool cabinet like this one. Now when the owner works on projects he can open the lid and have a handy spot to store those odd screws & parts and not have to worry about losing them. If he gets interrupted, no worries, he can shut the lid and his parts will be safely tucked away until next time.
In the next picture we start to move into the larger electric tools. We installed hooks for the frequently used tools and also included an extension cord - store it where you use it. Other electric tools are stored on the shelving unit to the right of this hanging area.
